If you’re dreaming of a beach wedding in Hawaiʻi, one of the most important things to understand is permits. While it may look effortless, most beaches across the islands require proper permission for weddings and ceremonies—especially if you’re working with a photographer or planning to have guests present.
For most beach weddings in Hawaiʻi, you’ll need a permit from the DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources). This applies to ceremonies on public beaches and typically covers small gatherings. The permit ensures your wedding is approved for that specific location and time, while also helping protect Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces. In some cases, additional permits may be required depending on the beach, guest count, and how long you plan to be there.

The process can feel a little confusing, but that’s where working with local vendors really helps. As a Hawaiʻi photographer, this is something I assist all of my couples with so you don’t have to stress about the details. Every island—and even each beach—can have slightly different regulations, so having someone familiar with the area makes everything much smoother.
At the end of the day, permits are all about caring for and respecting Hawaiʻi. Once that part is taken care of, you can fully relax and enjoy your beach wedding knowing everything is handled.
